Month of January

For the month of January, artist Lori Sortino will be displaying her pieces in the Events Gallery. Stop by the Tasting Room to sample some Dam Fine Wine and view these breathtaking works of art. Open for viewing daily from 10am‑5:30pm.

Lori has chosen to show a little of all of her current work here at Castoro. Aside from her paintings, the bulk of her work is photography. Her current focus’ with photography are: horses, action, landscapes, portraits, and ceremonial events.

Her paintings are from her Painting with your Muse’ series, which is a painting style inspired by Shiloh Sophia McCloud and Jodi Bogart. Lori fell in love with this style at her first workshop with Jodi in 2013. When the painting is created, there is no pre-planning. Everything that goes on the canvas comes from the muse within, in the moment, and the painting literally emerges to the artist through the process. When done, the name reveals itself, and then the meaning or messages come through by sitting with the painting, usually within a day or so.

The Equine series has a story behind it. Lori saw a friend’s post on facebook one day, full of photos of wild horses. He had taken a trip to Nevada and had photographed wild horses. Something inside her immediately knew she HAD to do this someday. It went on her bucket list. In December 2017, Lori was clipping photos out of magazines for collage work and she noticed an article about a Wild Horse Sanctuary in Lompoc and San Luis Obispo. It caught her eye and she put the article on the fridge.

Around April 2018, she finally took the article out from under that magnet and went to the internet to look up this Wild Horse Sanctuary: Return to Freedom*. She found a week long photo safari led by world renowned equine photographer Tony Stromberg and was able to join this excursion June 25 – 29, 2018. The photographs you see hanging in this show are from that week. Lori came home with over 10,000 images. Go to her web site www.essencecaptured.com and sign up for the newsletter to see the new horse image released each month.

Lori enjoys action photography with the horses, dogs, and also with people, such as participants in Marathons, Triathlons, and cycling events. She loves to capture images at special events, such as the Long Dance Ceremony, which has been held locally for 28 years. She loves to travel and photograph beautiful landscapes and nature, and has naturally photographed our California central coast.
